What schedule drug is gabapentin? ›

As mentioned above, gabapentin is classified as a schedule V medication in states where it's a controlled substance. This means the risk of addiction is low compared to other controlled substances.

This combination medication is used for a short time (usually less than 10 days) to help relieve moderate to severe pain. It contains an opioid pain reliever (hydrocodone) and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-NSAID (ibuprofen). Hydrocodone works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.

Tramadol is an FDA-approved medication for pain relief. It has specific indications for moderate to severe pain. It is considered a class IV drug by the FDA and has been since July 7th, 2014.

Gabapentin is not a narcotic. It's not classified as a controlled substance in most states. (Kentucky, West Virginia, Michigan, Tennessee, and Virginia have reclassified gabapentin as a Schedule V controlled substance). Gabapentin is not an opioid.

Schedule I drugs are considered to have the highest risk of abuse while Schedule V drugs have the lowest potential for abuse.

Their kidney health and even their vision may improve. For dependent drinkers, blood pressure may reduce to normal levels by the 3rd or 4th week.

Dopamine in the mesolimbic pathway is known to play an important role in the rewarding effects of both drugs of abuse and foods. Addictive drugs and palatable foods activate DA-containing neurons in the ventral tegmental area, which project to the nucleus accumbens (NAc).

The mesolimbic pathway and a specific set of the pathway's output neurons (e.g. D1-type medium spiny neurons within the nucleus accumbens) play a central role in the neurobiology of addiction.

Alcohol, by promoting γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) subtype GABA_A receptor function, may inhibit GABAergic transmission in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), thereby disinhibiting (i.e., activating) VTA dopamine. As a result, these neurons release dopamine in the nucleus accumbens, activating reward processes there.

One of the brain circuits that is activated by opioids is the mesolimbic (midbrain) reward system. This system generates signals in a part of the brain called the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that result in the release of the chemical dopamine (DA) in another part of the brain, the nucleus accumbens (NAc) (Figure 1).

The mesolimbic dopaminergic system plays a major role in addiction, and the developmental ethanol-exposure-induced changes in this system are thought to promote substance abuse later in life.
