last night they were on american idolmariah careyas the main mentor. One thing they said really shocked me. Maria wrote almost all of her songs.this pageSaid the same. also, maria has surpassed elvisThe artist with the most singles.
seriously? ?18 first places? That's incredible. Why isn't she considered one of the greatest singer-songwriters in music history? John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain? They are nothing compared to Maria!
I truly believe that if Mariah Carey were a man, she would be considered a genius. Why is coverage so low for women? I remember watching Shakira and how she wrote a bunch of hit songs in multiple languages. Sure, she's a star, but they don't call her a phenomenon. I thought her MTV special, the Unplugged special, was great. Then she felt she had to lose weight and dye her hair blonde to make more money. If she and Mariah were men, they shouldn't have boobs and kids like crazy. They may be fat and bald, but that's okay.
Well, I didn't mean that before, but from now on, I have to include Mariah Carey in all conversations about the greatest singer-songwriter of all time.
UPDATE: Hmm. The story gets a little blurry. I looked up every one of her songs to find writing credits. She never seems to be singled out. Always with another person or group of people. She's always listed first, but what does that mean? Does she write songs or just lyrics? Does he write music or just work with serious songwriters? what happened?
How would I clarify this question? This is indeed the conundrum of our time.

This article _deserves_ is filed under Random. :p But I think you answered your own question when you discovered other "authors" of her songs - she probably didn't collaborate on them at all. I mean, she might be able to do it, but if you can pay someone else to do the work and still get the credit, why not?

(Video) Mariah Carey Genius Level: The Full Interview on Her Iconic Hits & Songwriting ProcessHello! I think as a songwriter, Mariah Carey is really more of a songwriter. If you listen to her songs, especially after Tony Mottola, the lyrics are really too personal for other people to write. Maybe that's why she's better known as a singer/diva rather than a songwriter, and why her creative credits are always limited to collaborations—because she needs help adding melodies to her music.

Mariah Carey wrote every song she sang, except cover songs. She writes many of the songs herself, but often collaborates with others.
It is extremely rare for an artist to write completely alone. Here are the technical details -
- If the name is listed first, that person is the quorum songwriter. They wrote most of the songs. Names are listed in order of contribution. So if someone else has input (even if it's just suggesting that the writer replace word Y with word X), they must be credited as the songwriter.
– If the artist samples anything from the song, the original author of the sampled song (no matter how many) must be credited. Mariah Carey samples songs a lot, so you'll often find about 5 names in her later work. True, they didn't contribute to the song, but Mariah will use lines from the song
(dobar primjer je We Belong Together - mariah koja koristi Bobby Womacks “if you think you're lonely now” značit će da mora navesti sve pisce i We Belong Together i If You Think Youre Lonely Now)

"So if someone else is involved (even if it's just suggesting that the writer replace word Y with word X), they must be considered songwriters."
Not subject to copyright law, which states that any contribution to a song must itself be eligible for copyright registration. One word, a few words, a whole sentence—these don't qualify. This myth is perpetuated by record label executives and producers who want to take advantage of the fact that most of the public - including most artists - don't know this. Besides not knowing, another factor that allows this to happen is that copyright law leaves a lot of room for negotiation. For example, an author may agree to add someone else as a co-author for almost any reason, including changing a single word. But if I, as the author, disagree with Tianwang adding his name as a co-author, then the law is on my side. If he said Singer had studied copyright law, they wouldn't have signed the 50% ownership of the master tape that copyright law assigns them by default (this number is also negotiable. Labels exploit artists that don't even know). The loan is more profitable as it likely means a 50% royalty. "The money is written" is misleading. It's not a lie that you can really make a lot of money writing. But "I'll Always Love You" made songwriter Dolly Parton (who still owns the rights to the song) millions, but Arista Records (which owns the master recording and the rights to that recording) made even more . Whitney Houston, probably not so much. She probably earned 10% in royalties (a pretty high estimate even for a well-known artist) — well over 50. In addition to the single, the soundtrack album containing it also sold hugely.

Also, yes, as another person commented, she's a lyricist, not a songwriter in any sense...it's been mentioned multiple times that Walter A. writes with her, and Mariah Carey often writes lyrics, Walter writes music. This would be considered a collaboration, as Walter would suggest changing words to match the music, and vice versa.

Mariah Carey is definitely a songwriter... when a record label decides what a song is about, the melody is the separate part. So when she sings the lyrics in a particular melodic way...that's a song. She then sang the arrangement to a pianist who sometimes helped her explain it. It's a pity that people don't recognize what a gifted talent she is... lyric

(Video) Mariah Carey's incessant efforts to try to convince everyone she writes all her songsOn earlier albums, she was listed as the sole lyricist and musical collaborator on most of the songs. Even though Walter A. has aged on her later albums, the "sound" of the ballad is the same. Mariah doesn't play the piano very well, and she writes like most songwriters—from hearing the chords to singing the melody. If you look at the ballads she wrote, she often collaborated with a pianist, and then the pianist was listed as the lyricist. In other cases, songs like "Heartbreaker" Mariah "only" wrote them, and the only other author listed is from the sample, proving that she wrote and sang the melody based on the chords she heard.

maria says:
"The way I usually work is to create a song without a title. We'll grab a hook, whether sampled or created, and use that as a working title. I write the lyrics first, then the melody and some instruments ...sometimes I get ideas for a piece of text. If I'm working with someone I'll steer them in the direction of the chords because I get all these melodic ideas and then if I don't have someone who's really good at the keyboard With me, I lose them. That's why I tend to collaborate, because I lose ideas before I find the chords. All these melodic ideas disappear."

She's like the opposite of Elton John; he composes music but doesn't actually write the lyrics to his songs. However, that doesn't seem to have diminished his reputation as a great songwriter.

Songwriters often gravitate toward certain chord progressions naturally. You'll find many of Mariah's early tracks very similar (Dreamlover, Heartbreaker, Fantasy). I think Sony really pushed her as a songwriter and artist. I don't think he writes that much now. After listening to her entire playlist, you can tell which songs are more like the author Maria. I think the tunes on the Butterfly album represent Mariah as a writer very well. The rhythm of the melody is very similar and her musical structure is similar to her previous work.
