When a cheeseburger hits your plate, it's hard to imagine anything other than how delicious it will be. But when you trace the origin of each ingredient (beef, fried eggs, splurge-worthy bacon), some disturbing truths emerge.

Not surprisingly, we care about where our food comes from. After all, in our world of packaged, pre-cooked fast food, it's easy to overlook. This year alone, shocking cases of animal cruelty on the record have convinced many of the biggest buyers of meat -- McDonald's, Burger King and Subway -- to make their chains more humane.

Still, we're far from feeling good about what to have for dinner, whether it's beef, chicken or eggs. Join us for check-inThe 8 Cruelest Foods You'll Ever Eat- Plus, what to do with them and what to eat at the same time.

These spiny guys can live as long as we do, but due to our appetite for lobster rolls, they usually don't. A recent study in the journalanimal behaviorshowed that, contrary to previous beliefs, lobsters and crabs feel pain and show signs of stress. According to other studies, lobsters also have a central nervous system. But that hasn't convinced many people to stop consuming them. Some upscale restaurants even offer live lobster sashimi, where you take the lobster out of the tank and in seconds it appears on your plate, sliced down the middle and curled.

The USDA and Vermont Farm Bureau suspended operations there pending an investigation, and a year later the plant's owner has pleaded no contest to the animal cruelty charges.
