The 8 Cruelest Foods You'll Ever Eat (1)

When a cheeseburger hits your plate, it's hard to imagine anything other than how delicious it will be. But when you trace the origin of each ingredient (beef, fried eggs, splurge-worthy bacon), some disturbing truths emerge.

Not surprisingly, we care about where our food comes from. After all, in our world of packaged, pre-cooked fast food, it's easy to overlook. Fortunately, there's a growing awareness of what matters: big food. This year alone, shocking cases of animal cruelty on the record have convinced many of the biggest buyers of meat -- McDonald's, Burger King and Subway -- to make their chains more humane.

Still, we're far from feeling good about what to have for dinner, whether it's beef, chicken or eggs. Join us for check-inThe 8 Cruelest Foods You'll Ever Eat- Plus, what to do with them and what to eat at the same time.

1. Lobster

The 8 Cruelest Foods You'll Ever Eat (2)

These spiny guys can live as long as we do, but due to our appetite for lobster rolls, they usually don't. A recent study in the journalanimal behaviorshowed that, contrary to previous beliefs, lobsters and crabs feel pain and show signs of stress. According to other studies, lobsters also have a central nervous system. But that hasn't convinced many people to stop consuming them. Some upscale restaurants even offer live lobster sashimi, where you take the lobster out of the tank and in seconds it appears on your plate, sliced down the middle and curled.

In 2005, the chain conducted an internal study into cancer and how it got to stores. Many male calves are destined to become calves because they cannot produce milk. A few days after one of the calves is born, it can be moved into a crate too small to turn around. How is this going:In 2009, the Humane Society of the United States documented the covert abuse of calves at a Vermont slaughterhouse. The USDA and Vermont Farm Bureau suspended operations there pending an investigation, and a year later the plant's owner has pleaded no contest to the animal cruelty charges. But there's good news: Veal crates are illegal in Arizona, California, Maine, Michigan, and Ohio. (For all the latest health food news, check out ourhere.)

Foie gras, which means "fatty liver" in French, is a silky-soft goose or duck delicacy that's often served in elegant, high-end restaurants - something you might want to indulge in. However, the way it gets to your plate isn't all that elegant. After about a month of force-feeding, they are slaughtered and their livers become your dinner.

How is this going:Force-feeding ducks is illegal in several countries, including the UK, Austria, Israel, Denmark and Poland, but it's not necessarily illegal to sell the stuff. Many of the cows there are dying a slow, painful death, and some of the cows caught on video were not even dead when they went to slaughter.
